Only 22 years old, Juan is a five-year pro – he made his debut in Mexico at 16. A prospect at 126 pounds, he has stayed fairly active in the ring and made good progress. He has stepped up in class of opposition, somewhat, in a few fights and has given strong efforts. Manager Roberto Sandoval said, "I have worked with Juan Carlos since he was nine years old – that’s when he started boxing. I trained him for six years – from when he was 12 years to 18 years. I trained him for all of his amateur fights and his first 15 pro fights. The other three years, Gerardo Espinoza has been his trainer. He’s been sparring all the time with the champion, Cristobal Cruz [note: IBF featherweight world titlist] and Hector Velazquez. He also been sparring with Antonio DeMarco and Vampiro Arceo. They’re all good guys – it’s good sparring. "His style is very intelligent. Juan Carlos has a good defense, good movement, good attack. He’s a good puncher. He’s tall, but he’s very good fighting at a distance or inside. "The real record for Juan Carlos is 25 wins. Juan Carlos fight in Rosalito two times, wins by knockout, but not put on record." Fight by Fight - 2009 - in his last fight on 10-9-09 in Ontario, CA, he TKO’d Yogli Herrera (22-9): the fight was co-featured at the Doubletree Hotel, and Juan dominated; he wore down Herrera with body punches and scored a knockdown with a left hook in the 3rd round; he scored another knockdown with a left hook in the 6th round, and the referee stopped the fight at 1:17... On 6-12-09 in Ontario he won a 10 round unanimous decision against Vyacheslav Gusev (16-1): Juan cut Gusev over his right eye with a jab in the 1st round and dominated most of the fight; he outboxed and outworked Gusev in the early rounds, but apparently injured both of his hands; Gusev pressed forward and rallied in the middle rounds, but Juan boxed and moved effectively in the late rounds; scored 98-92, 98-92, 97-93; after the fight, Juan said, "My formula all along was to box and move. On 2-27-09 in Ontario he TKO’d Omar Lizarraga (15-7-1): the fight headlined at the Doubletree Hotel; Juan scored two knockdowns with left hooks in the 2nd round – Lizarraga got up both times, but Juan rocked him with a right hand and the referee stopped the fight at 2:19... 2008 – on 11-28-08 in Ontario he won an 8 round majority decision against Jesus Perez (25-21-3): Perez was an awkward opponent and it was a sloppy fight; but Juan steadily wore him down with body punches, finished the fight strongly, and won by scores of 79-73, 77-75, 76-76... On 7-25-08 in Corona, CA, he won an 8 round unanimous decision against Andres Ledesma (14-9-1): the fight headlined at Omega Products International; Juan injured his right hand in the 2nd round, but dominated most of the fight; he was penalized one point for low blows in the 4th round, but scored a knockdown with a left hook to the body in the 7th round; Juan was penalized another point for low blows in the 8th, but won by scores of 78-71, 76-73, 77-73; after the fight, Juan said, "My hand - I would have had a better chance of knocking him out. We had good training for this fight. We knew he was going to be a difficult opponent. On 8-24-07 in Corona he knocked out Adam Carrera (19-2): the fight headlined at Omega Products International, and ended with a one-punch knockout; Carrera pressed forward and Juan boxed and moved well; the early rounds were close, but Juan scored a knockdown with a left hook to the body in the 3rd round and Carrera was counted out at 1:52; after the fight, Juan said, "I was looking for that punch. We had talked before the fight to look for the knockout after the third round."... I give him my respects since he was able to take a lot of punishment. He is the best fighter I have faced, and I look forward to facing more of this type of fighters in the coming year. I feel very satisfied in winning my first title in front of my native city and with my uncle, Victor Burgos, in attendance."...
